Helping Hawaiʻi’s disaster survivors tell their story once
The Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services chose Futurity after the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. Today the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency and DHS use it statewide, for every disaster since, with community partners working in the same system.

The challenge
Recovery in Hawaiʻi rarely happens one disaster at a time. A household may first reach out through 211 or a community organization, move between assistance programs, and still be recovering when the next storm arrives.
When each program keeps its own records, survivors repeat their story to every new caseworker, and every retelling means reliving the disaster.
What Futurity does
- One shared record for each household, from first contact through housing recovery.
- Requests for help come straight into Futurity, so staff can open cases without retyping and see likely duplicates flagged.
- Caseworkers can see what assistance a household has already received.
- Community organizations and recovery partners work in the same system with the access their role allows.
- System notifications keep case managers on top of new assignments, tasks and notes.
- Dashboards and reports show leadership household needs and recovery progress across the state.
Six disasters, one system
The same platform has carried survivors from one event to the next since the 2023 Lahaina wildfires.
“A family’s recovery story should stay connected, even when the agencies helping them change.”
